SolidNature are delighted to present ‘Surplus Series’ – a collaboration with celebrated Danish artist and designer Birgitte Due Madsen. The capsule collection comprises of a range of original homeware pieces, bringing together the effortless sculptural aesthetic for which she is known with striking Marble and Onyx varieties from the SolidNature collection. Permitting the slow and instinctive development of her work trajectory is what Birgitte Due Madsen calls the “elongated project”. This has lead to the creation of various corresponding projects often stemming from the same classic disciplines and methods. Building on this approach, “SurPlus” is a project based on the pertinent idea of polychromy. Polychromy has been known since antiquity, where sculptors and architects used a variety of colors to bring life into their artwork, to resemble the world around them. The “SurPlus” is a series of scalable furniture pieces and sculptures exclusively made.

To make the most of the beauty that nature provides, each piece has been designed to fit the material available, using only what was already found at the warehouse.
Surplus has been created entirely from natural stone off-cuts and the specification of each piece (whether furniture or sculpture) is made on the premises of the material and the final composition of each piece will be defined by the stones available. To mirror Birgitte’s wider body of work, the designs reflect her minimalist and subtle aesthetic, the lines and angles of the furniture pieces will serve purposes of both strength as well as the aesthetic composition, and the variegated colors link back to her work in polychromy. The outcome of this beautiful collaborative process is a direct reflection of the synergy that exists between both Due Madsen and SolidNature.
The resulting pieces are a sight to behold, a true marriage of Birgitte’s visionary design and SolidNature’s skill and expertise. The juxtaposition between the hard and cold nature of the material, is balanced out by the soft and subtle lines of the designs. The transparency of onyx creates a beautiful glow that illuminates the furniture and sculptures from within, drawing the audience’s eye from color, to form and back again, arousing the audience to think of what other materials could be reused and recycled.
